Years ago, when my students had a tough time following some of the notes I gave, I came up with a template that structured the process. Students would get these handouts and I would direct them to find either the information in the text or from my ‘stand-and-deliver’ lectures. They would then be able to form questions from their research and that would be the content of our discussions. I also allowed there to be an ‘extra credit’ option on the back of the page, for students to create a word list, a timeline, a drawing or diagram, or reflections for a journal. It worked pretty well. I would collect them at the end of the week and students would get a good ‘notebook grade’. Well, here’s to history repeating itself!
