Unit 1: 2000′s America in the 21st Century

president-obamaThis week, we’ll discuss topics that are most current in our country’s history.  We’ll begin by looking at America in the world today – its relationships with other nations and its ability to exert influence around the world.  How powerful is the US?  What is the impact of other nations and their political, economic and military policies on us?  Then we’ll take a look at the current economic crisis.  We’ll look at how it got started, what impact it had on the last year, and what it means for your future.  On Wednesday, we’ll examine the War on Terror in the context of the new Obama administration (compared to the Bush Administration).  What is the conflict about?  How do we know when we’ve won, or are winning?  Where is the battlefield?  Who is the enemy and why do they want to declare war on the US?  Finally, at the end of the week, we’ll examine the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars as well as the 21st century changes that shape all of our lives.

As a model of learning, we are exploring the most recent history first.  This is the time that matters most to your lives.  Each day we’ll do various assignments and projects to really take a hard look at the world around us.  Then we’ll move back decade by decade, week by week.
